PROVO, UT – The LMU volleyball team faced a challenging match against No. 9 BYU Cougars, resulting in a 3-0 loss Wednesday night.
The BYU Cougars secured a 3-0 advantage against the Lions in the opening set. The teams traded points until
Kari Geissberger and
Bella Mathis teamed up for a block, initiating a run of three consecutive points, making the score 8-7, Cougars. Following that, the Lions achieved an impressive streak of seven consecutive points, including five kills. This surge allowed the Lions to jump ahead, establishing a 14-10 lead. BYU responded with a couple three point runs, managing to regain the lead from LMU and eventually building a four-point advantage at 23-19. A few plays later,
Amethyst Harper's successful kill ignited a momentum shift for the Lions. LMU went on a three-point streak, narrowing the gap to just one point behind the Cougars at 23-22. Unfortunately, the Lions couldn't hold their momentum and ultimately fell short, resulting in a set one loss of 25-22.
Set two started with a kill by
Jacquelyn Moore that would put the Lions on the board first. No team managed to earn more than a single point until the Cougars scored a streak of four unanswered points, pushing them ahead at 11-7. BYU later embarked on another consecutive point streak, extending the score to 19-12. During the Lions next play,
Tyler Alcorn entered the game and quickly secured a kill.
Maddie Boerstra and Shaffer followed suit with two successful kills, narrowing the gap to six points between the Lions and the Cougars, the score being 22-16. However, BYU ultimately clinched the set with a three-point streak, securing a 25-16 victory for set two.
In the third set, the Lions seized an early lead, courtesy of a service ace by
Mia Schafer and a kill by Harper. LMU's consecutive scoring pushed them ahead 5-2, prompting an early timeout from BYU. BYU regained the lead scoring six consecutive points making the score, 9-6. While the Lions managed to accumulate a few points, the Cougars initiated a five-point streak, building a 20-14 advantage. In a quick response, the Lions secured two points via a kill by Harper and a solo block by Alcorn, inching them closer to the Cougars. Despite the Lions' progress, BYU would secure the third set with a score of 25-19, completing a 3-0 sweep over the Lions.
Harper concluded the match with 11 kills, boasting a hitting efficiency of .333%. Sam Hasting concluded the game with nine digs, while
Isabella Bareford contributed with 19 assists.
The Lions next game is Friday, Sep. 1, against Weber State in Ogden, UT, at 5 PM.
