OGDEN, UT – LMU women's volleyball defeated the Weber State Wildcats in a 3-0 sweep Friday evening.
In the first set,
Jacquelyn Moore started the game with a kill, giving the Lions an early lead. LMU maintained this lead until the Wildcats secured a one-point advantage, 5-4. However, the score soon tied at, 7-7, when
Amethyst Harper's kill started a two-point streak. The Lions continued to trail the Wildcats until midway through the set when
Maddie Boerstra spiked the ball, and Kari Geisberger followed with two consecutive service aces, propelling the Lions to a, 12-11, lead. The Lions then embarked on a significant 9-0 run towards the end of the set, with Geissberger contributing four of those points through kills. With this impressive unanswered point streak, the Lions claimed the first set with a score of 25-17.
In the second set, Weber State secured the first point, but the Lions responded by scoring three consecutive points to take the lead. The Wildcats then had two separate two-point streaks that pushed them ahead of the Lions, but
Bella Mathis' kill swung the momentum in LMU's favor. The Lions continued to go on a 3-0 run, regaining a one-point lead, 11-10. Throughout the second set, the competition remained close, with neither team holding a lead larger than three points. A kill by the Wildcats leveled the score, 22-22, making it a closely contested match. Following a service error by WSU, LMU gained a slight advantage, leading by one, 24-23. Fortunately, a crucial kill by Harper secured the necessary point for LMU to win the second set with a score of, 25-23.
WSU didn't make the third set an easy one for LMU. The Lions started with a three-point streak, but the Wildcats swiftly responded with a four-point streak of their own, taking a 5-3 lead. However, Moore's kill marked the beginning of a 4-0 run for the Lions, moving them to a 7-5 lead. At the midway point of the set, WSU managed multiple streaks, including a five-point run, which gave them a five-point advantage at 16-11. The Lions needed a response, and they delivered. LMU made an impressive four unanswered points streak, closing the gap to just one point at 16-15. A block by
Michelle Shaffer then tied the game at 17-17. LMU regained the lead when Shaffer's kill put them ahead by one at 19-18. As the set neared its conclusion, the Wildcats were only trailing the Lions by one point, but LMU finished strong with a 3-0 run, ultimately winning the set 25-21 and securing a 3-0 victory in the match.
Harper finished the game with 11 kills and Moore finished with nine, both ending the match with a hitting percentage above 500. Geissberger also contributed nine kills to the team's effort and led both teams in service aces with three.
Isabella Bareford and
Mia Schafer combined for 19 assists. Additionally,
Sam Hastings topped both teams with 12 digs.
The Lions next match is tomorrow, Sept. 2, against the Utah State Aggies, at 1 PM PST.
