Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Coach Trent Kersten Celebrates First Win as LMU Triumphs Against Long Beach State

LONG BEACH, CA – The LMU women's volleyball team got their first win of the new season against the Long Beach State Beaches, 3-0. Notably, this win also marked the first victory for head coach Trent Kersten at LMU.

The Beach took the lead first in set one, going on a 4-0 run. The Lions got on the board first when LBSU had a service error. Both teams went back and forth until the Lions went on a three-point run, now trailing The Beach, 9-7.

A kill by Madeline Boerstra, from Isabella Bareford, put the Lions under one, 10-9. It wasn't until Mia Schafer aced a serve that would tie LMU with LBSU. The Lions eventually surged ahead when Kari Geissberger, Jacquelyn Moore, and Boerstra collaborated to block The Beach's attack.  The rest of the set was tight, but the Lions won in set one, 26-24.

The beginning of set two started with a kill by Moore that got the Lions on the board early. LMU took a big lead when they went on a four-unanswered point streak started by a LBSU service error. The Lions would go on another four-point streak leading The Beach by nine, 15-6. LBSU followed with two three-point streaks but still trailed the Lions, 16-12. Later in the set, a kill by Amethyst Harper, from Michelle Shaffer, started a streak that would put the Lions up by eight, 23-15. The Lions would win set two, 25-17.

During the third set, the Lions sprinted to an early 8-3 lead over The Beach. However, midway through the set, LBSU responded with multiple three-point sequences, closing in at 11-10. A kill by Bella Mathis would help give the Lions a bigger lead and ignite three unanswered points for LMU, making the score, 17-11. While both teams exchanged points sporadically, a kill by Geissberger initiated a streak for the Lions, extending the lead to 22-16. LMU would close out the match with a final kill by Mathis ending set three with the score of, 25-19, and a sweep by the Lions, 3-0. Moore led the team with eight kills and Bareford ended with a team-high, 17 assists.

The Lions next game is Wednesday, Aug. 30, against BYU at 6:00 PM in Provo, UT.
