IRVINE, Calif. – Despite trailing after the opening quarter, LMU women's water polo moved to 5-1 in the Golden Coast Conference after defeating Concordia University, 16-6 on Saturday afternoon.
The Lions trailed 2-1 after the opening eight-minute session as
Marialena Seletopoulou's goal was sandwiched between a pair of goals by the Golden Eagles.
LMU scored the first three goals of the second quarter to take a lead that would last for the remainder of the day.
Ruth Arino Ruiz tied the game at 2-2 on a powerplay goal and
Kelsey Snelgar followed with two-consecutive even strengthed goals to take a 4-2 lead. After CUI cut it to a one-goal difference, the Lions closed the quarter with three final goals before halftime. Arino Ruiz scored twice within a minute of each other, and
Mollie Williams made it an 8-3 game with 27 seconds remaining before halftime.
The lead continued to grow in the third as Arino Ruiz began the second half with an opening minute goal, and Williams followed with two more of her own. Arino Ruiz scored at the three-minute mark for one of her game-high seven goals.
Risse Sanchez extended the lead to 12-3 with 2:16 to play in the period. After LMU scored the first six goals of the quarter, Concordia added got one of their own.
Arino Ruiz scored two of the first three goals of the fourth quarter. Concordia answered each one with a goal of their own. Snelgar scored with 3:32 to play and
Sophie Kadifa pushed it to a 16-6 game with 1:12 on the clock.
Madison Davis made four saves in the first 21 minutes to take the win.
Talia Herbermann added a save and two steals over the final 11 minutes.
The regular season will close out on Friday with a 4:00 PM game at San Diego State.
