SAN DIEGO, Calif. – With Friday's win over No. 24 San Diego State, No. 17 LMU clinched second place in the Golden Coast Conference entering the conference championships. The Lions maintained their positioning in the standings with a 15-8 win.
The Lions scored three goals to open the game and take momentum from the start.
Yanah Gerber scored on LMU's opening possession,
Ruth Arino Ruiz added a goal a minute later, and
Marialena Seletopoulou pushed it to a 3-0 game. SDSU got on the board with just over three minutes to play in the period and cut it to a 3-2 game to beat the buzzer and close out the period.
The Aztecs tied the game at 3-all with 6:38 to play in the second. Gerber took advantage of a powerplay situation, converting off the assist from Arino Ruiz. The lead grew to 7-3 as Seletopoulou,
Kelsey Snelgar, and
Isabella Barajas all scored. San Diego State closed the half with two goals.
Seletopoulou converted a penalty shot to open the third quarter and Arino Ruiz followed with an even-strengthed goal, and
Mei Vilanova doubled up the score at 10-5 with 6:35 on the clock. After SDSU got one back, Barajas scored two more and
Alexandra Akritidou added one to close out the third.
The two teams traded off goals in the final quarter. LMU responded to each San Diego State goal, with
Iris Gallagher and
Mikayla Lopez each beating the goalkeeper.
Madison Davis made six saves in her 26:39 to play.
Talia Herbermann closed out the final 5:21.
The GCC will release the tournament standings once the weekend concludes.
