LOS ANGELES – Jared Thomas knocked in a pair of runs, Zach Kirby went six strong innings and Jimmy Galicia slammed the door shut in the LMU baseball team's 3-2 victory over Santa Clara on Saturday night in Page Stadium.Â
Â
The Lions scored three runs in the third inning and Thomas had his fingerprints all over each one. Khadim Diaw led off with a single up the middle. Sam Biller followed right behind, singling in between third and shortstop. Thomas stepped up and worked his way into a 2-0 count before lacing a ball fair down the first base line that found its way into the corner. Diaw scored easily and Biller scored without a throw to give the Lions a 2-0 advantage. Thomas would end up scoring on a
Connor Blough ground out.Â
Â
Kirby displayed grit by battling through six innings. He allowed five hits and walked a pair while striking out eight Broncos. He got out of a bases loaded jam in the fourth and worked around a leadoff double in the sixth to keep the Broncos off the board. Â
Â
Seamus Barrett took over for Kirby in the seventh and allowed a pair of baserunners but also notched a pair of strikeouts. Â
Â
Logan Hurd worked the eighth and gave up a pair of runs. With two outs and the tying run on third base, he got a chopper to shortstop Benny Casillas who backhanded and fired across the diamond to nab the runner in a very close play. Â
Â
Jimmy Galicia worked the ninth for the save. Santa Clara got runners to the corners with two outs, but Galicia bore down and got the strikeout to send the Lion faithful home winners. Â
Â
Blough and Diego Baqueiro both extended their streaks on Saturday night. Blough was hit by a pitch in the eighth inning to increase his on-base streak to 15 games. Baqueiro's fifth inning single increased his hitting streak to 10 games and his on-base streak to 14. Â
Â
With the win, the Lions move into a share of first place in the West Coast Conference. Â
Â
The Lions wrap up the series on Sunday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. (PT) against Santa Clara. Â
