LOS ANGELES – Dylan Dennis collected four RBI, Sam Biller scored a pair of runs, and the Lions bullpen once again slammed the door in a 7-6 win over Santa Clara on Sunday afternoon in Page Stadium. The sweep of Santa Clara combined with other West Coast Conference results from the weekend put the Lions in a tie for first place. Â
Â
Santa Clara scored a pair of runs off starter
Owen Hackman in the first, but the Lions came right back with three of their own. Biller singled to shortstop and advanced to second when
Jared Thomas was hit by a pitch.
Connor Blough walked to load the bases before Dennis drilled a ball to the warning track to score all three runners. Â
Â
The Lions would add a run in the second as well.
Cole Roberts led off the inning by lacing a pitch down the left field line for a stand up double. He advanced to third on a passed ball before coming in to score on a
Khadim Diaw single. Â
Â
Santa Clara would cut into the deficit in the third inning and then take the lead in the sixth with three runs coming across for a 6-4 tally.Â
Â
The Lions would not give in. Biller reached on a fielder's choice in the seventh. Thomas followed with a walk.
Diego Baqueiro would extend his hit streak to 12 games with a single to load the bases. From there, LMU got walks from Blough, Dennis and Roberts to plate three runs and take a one-run lead.Â
Â
Will Grimm, who was on for relief of Hackman in the seventh, got the first out of the eighth before handing the ball to Merrick Baldo to shut the door. Baldo recorded a five out save while only allowing one baserunner and striking out one. It was Baldo's second save of the series and fifth overall this season. Â
Â
The Lions have a tough road trip coming up before returning home after Easter. On Tuesday, Apr. 4, the Lions head east to face USC in a midweek matchup before heading to Portland to face off against the Pilots in a weekend series taking place from Apr. 6 to Apr. 8. The Pilots escaped Moraga on Sunday to remain tied for first in the WCC.Â
