Lions Storm Back to Clinch Series from BYU

LOS ANGELES – Diego Baqueiro recorded three hits, Dylan Dennis had three RBI and the Lions baseball team defeated BYU 10-9 on Saturday afternoon in Page Stadium. 
 
The Lions scored first but fell behind after a five-run fifth inning by the Cougars. The Lions finished the game with eight unanswered runs to take the victory and the series. 
 
Khadim Diaw led off the game with a well-worked walk and advanced to second on a balk. Sam Biller knocked him in with a single through the right side for the early lead. 
 
The Cougars tied things up in the top of the third. 
 
LMU would regain the lead in the bottom of the fourth. Connor Blough reached on a fielder's choice before advancing to second on a pickoff attempt that went wide. He advanced to third on a wild pitch. Dylan Dennis came through with the infield in and singled through the left side to take the lead. 
 
The Cougars would put up a five-spot in the fifth, sucking the life out of the stadium. They would add another two in the sixth for a six-run lead. 
 
The Lions would match the two runs in the bottom of the sixth. Jared Thomas led off the inning by lacing a single into right field forcing a Cougar pitching change. Baqueiro would follow up with a double advancing Thomas to third. Dennis would hit a sacrifice fly in the ensuing at bat scoring Thomas, with Baqueiro following closely behind after the throw to third went wide. 
 
The Cougars would add a run in the top of the seventh, but that would be the end of the scoring  
 
The Lions would add a four-spot in the bottom half of the seventh. Diaw would lead off with a double down the left field line. He would advance to third on a wild pitch when Biller walked. Thomas walked in the ensuing plate appearance to load the bases. Baqueiro walked on four pitches to force the first run of the inning in. Blough singled through the left side to add another. Brett Zimmerman came on as a pinch hitter and singled through the right side to add another run and Cole Roberts followed up with a sacrifice fly to push the Lions to within one run. 
 
The Lions would take the lead in the bottom of the eighth. Biller reached on a fielder's choice after Diaw singled to open the inning. The BYU shortstop made an excellent play to stay on the base on the wide throw from the pitcher to get an out on the play. Thomas followed up with a four-pitch walk. Baqueiro doubled down the line, scoring Biller from second and advancing Thomas to third. Dennis would follow up with a sacrifice fly for his third RBI of the day to give the Lions a one-run lead. 
 
Jimmy Galicia would shut down the Cougars in the top of the ninth to preserve the victory and earn the win.  
 
LMU pitching on the day was moderately effective, but the Cougars took advantage of opportunities to stake themselves to an early lead.  
 
Owen Hackman got the start and went 4.1 innings. He struck out one, walked two and gave up three runs (two earned). Seamus Barrett would come on in relief and struggled through 0.1 innings while allowing three. Austin Schroeder followed up and could not record an out. Merrick Baldo got out of the fifth inning and went 2.1 innings and allowed three runs. Galicia came on in the eighth and recorded the final six outs.  
 
The Lions are scheduled to play Tuesday, March 21 at 6:05 p.m. (PT) against Cal State Fullerton.
