Pitcher's Duel Goes to the Commodores

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Khadim Diaw homered for the third time this season and Diego Barrera allowed only a single run, but the Lions fell to No. 7 Vanderbilt on Friday night 2-1 at Hawkins Field in Nashville, Tenn.
Barrera had four strikeouts through two innings and finished his night with six. He allowed five hits and walked one over six innings of work.

Austin Schroeder was tagged with the loss after allowing one run in the seventh. Logan Hurd came in and picked off Enrique Bradfield Jr. at first before getting the first out in the eighth. Cole Chimenti got the final two outs without incident.

The Lions got on the board first after Diaw took a 3-2 breaking ball and depositing it over the left field fence.

The Lions led until the bottom of the sixth when the Commodores tied things up on a single to right field. After runners advanced on a wild pitch, Barrera buckled down and got out of the inning with no more damage. Dylan Dennis made a solid snag at first base on a liner for the first out. Barrera got a strikeout for the second out and got a groundout to first to end the threat.

Devan Ornelas returned to the lineup and doubled off the wall in the fourth inning.

Trey Becker got the start at third base and doubled in the second inning for the first hit of the ballgame.

The Lions still have a pair of contests against Vanderbilt. They will meet tomorrow at 12:00 p.m. (PT) before finishing up the series at 11 a.m. on Sunday.
