Box Score LA JOLLA, Calif. – LMU women's water polo continues to play tough, ranked teams to open the UCSD Triton Invitations. The #22 Lions matched up against #16 UC Santa Barbara and kept within a goal until the final 30 seconds of play, and dropping the game, 8-6.
LMU fell behind 1-0 before
Mollie Williams tied the game at 1-all and Marialena Seletopotoulou pushed the Lions ahead. After the Gauchos evened the score, Seletopoulou added a second to give LMU a 3-2 lead with less than two minutes to play.
The Gauchos took the lead back 4-3 to open the second quarter ahead of
Alexandra Akritidou equalized at the 3:34 mark. UCSB took a 5-4 lead into the half after scoring with 2:13 on the clock.
Williams tied the score at 5-5 less than two minutes into the third quarter. The Gauchos responded with the next two goals to retake the lead. With five seconds remaining in the period,
Ruth Arino Ruiz brought the Lions back within one heading into the final eight minutes.
The Lions tried to equalize for the entire fourth quarter but could not get the ball into the back of the cage. UC Santa Barbara scored with 29 seconds remaining to double their lead and close out the game.
LMU's final game will be played Sunday at 10:00 AM against Concordia from Canyonview Pool.
