LOS ANGELES – The LMU women's basketball team defeated the Pepperdine Waves in a close, 76-71, game Saturday afternoon.
Ariel Johnson and
Alexis Mark both finished the game with 18 points.
In the first quarter
Nicole Rodriguez knocked down a three-pointer putting the Lions on the board. LMU would follow with six more points putting the Lions up by eight, 14-6. With 20 seconds left in the quarter the Waves hit a jumper making the score, 15-10.
The Lions shot over 50% in the second quarter with
Cassandra Gordon leading the way with five points. A three pointer by Gordon would give the Lions their biggest lead in the second quarter, 38-25.
The Waves started creeping up towards the end of the quarter going on a 9-0 run; finishing the quarter with a made layup with .1 second left on the clock.
Going into halftime the Lions were still leading by four, 38-34.
At the start of the third quarter, Pepperdine scored five points out the gate, but LMU would follow with five points of their own still leading, 43-39. The Lions biggest lead of the quarter came when Rodriguez knocked down a three with 18 seconds left, but the Waves chipped it down by two with free throws.
In the start of fourth quarter the Waves went on an 11-point streak leading the now by two, 62-60. That was the only lead the Waves would have in the fourth. After Mark drew a foul, made the layup and freethrow, the Lions would hold onto the lead for the rest of the game. The Lions would win, 76-71.
Rodriguez finished the game with 15 points and
Khari Clark finished with 10.
The Lions next game is Feb. 23 against the Santa Clara Broncos in Gersten Pavilion.
