SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Despite a new career-high of 36 points from senior
Cam Shelton, the Lions could not take down Santa Clara on the road in the lone matchup of the season between the two teams. The Broncos took the game, 71-69, behind two of the three leading scorers in the West Coast Conference.
For the second straight game, the Lions fell behind from the jump. Santa Clara scored the first 12 points of the afternoon before
Cam Shelton hit a field goal to put the Lions on the board. After being shutout in the opening 20 minutes on Thursday, Shelton finished with 18 points before halftime on Saturday on 7-for-12 shooting.
LMU strung together a quick 12-0 run of their own, using just three and a half minutes to pull back within a point of the Broncos. Shelton opened the run with a three and
Keli Leaupepe ended the run the same way.
Jalin Anderson hit a three that sparked a 5-0 run to tie game for the first time at 23-all.
The Lions ended the half on a 10-2 run highlighted by the buzzer-beating three from
James Nobles to send LMU into the locker room with a 37-30 lead.
Santa Clara retook the lead with a 12-4 start to the second half. The score flipped several times throughout the game, which featured 16 lead changes and nine ties.
Shelton put LMU back on top six different times in the second half alone with his career-scoring week continuing. Shelton duplicated his 18-point first half with 18 more points in the second half to finish with 36 points.
The Broncos built up a five-point lead with less than three minutes to play.
Michael Graham dunked the ball to make it a one-possession game.
Santa Clara hit a pair of free throws with 1:41 on the clock to rebuild their five-point lead. Leaupepe answered with two free throws on the offensive end. Shelton forced a turnover with one of his game-high three steals and following a timeout scored his 35
th and 36
th points with a driving layup.
After fouling, Brandin Podziemski split his free throws to make it a two-point game with 18 seconds to play. Podziemski also reached the 30-point mark to finish as Santa Clara's leading scorer.
With fouls to give, the Broncos took two quick ones that resulted in out of bounds plays. LMU then had a three-point attempt to win it and one of Leaupepe's eight offensive rebounds to keep the ball alive but couldn't get the game-tying second chance to fall.
The Lions grabbed 16 offensive rebounds compared to just two, which resulted in a 22-2 advantage in second chance points.
LMU shot a season-best 94.1 percent from the free throw line, hitting 16-for-17 from the charity stripe and all four in the second half.
The Lions return to Los Angeles to host the final two home games of the regular season this upcoming week. Nationally-ranked Gonzaga comes to Gersten Pavilion on Thursday night, followed by Saturday's matchup against Pacific which will include a special recognition for LMU's senior class.
