Lions Tough Battle Ends in Close Defeat by Cardinals

 
BEAUMONT, TX – The Lions fell to the Lamar Cardinals, 58-61, on Saturday afternoon. LMU is now 5-7 overall this season.
 
Amaya Oliver showcased another impressive double-double, contributing 12 points and securing 11 rebounds, leading both teams in rebounds. 
 
Sydney Gandy added nine points to the board and led the game with four assists.
 
Da'Ja Hamilton opened up the game, knocking down a three-pointer. The Lions would score the next five points, leaving Lamar scoreless for the game's first three minutes. Going into the game's first timeout, LMU's defense held the Cardinals to just 10 points in the first quarter, establishing an 18-10 lead entering the second.
 
A three-pointer by Noelle Yancy put the Lions up 11 and got them over the 20-point hump. An immediate basket by Maya Hernandez caused Lamar to call a timeout due to being down, 23-10. Lamar gained momentum midway in the quarter, going on a 7-0 run, but a much needed three from Ella Wedin put LMU up nine, 26-17. The last two baskets for LMU were three-pointers, making the score 34-24 going into halftime.
 
Lamar narrowed the gap in the third quarter, closing in at 36-34, making it a closely contested game. LMU held a slim three-point lead going into the fourth quarter, with the score at 43-40.
 
The fourth quarter saw a tied score at 46, and Lamar eventually took the lead, maintaining it in the final minutes. Gandy's three-pointer tied the score at 58-58 with two minutes left, but a turnover by LMU allowed Lamar to secure a last-minute three-pointer, sealing their victory at 61-58.
 
The Lion's next game is in Gersten Pavilion on Jan. 4, 2024, against the San Francisco Dons at 4 PM.
