LOS ANGELES – LMU men's water polo moved to 4-1 in the West Coast Conference following a Thursday night win over California Baptist University, 18-11. The Lions scored 10 unanswered goals to break an 8-8 tie and move to victory.
Augie Renezeder scored the first goal of the game to push LMU ahead first before CBU answer with the tie and go-ahead goal midway through the opening period.
Tyler Harvey briefly tied the game at 2-all before the Lancers retook the lead.
Denzel Tate scored the final goal of the quarter to make it 3-3 after one period.
LMU scored the first three goals of the second period as
Kade Margain opened the scoring and
Abel Romero Corbalan accounted for the next two. CBU closed out the period with the next two goals to pull within one at the half.
The Lancers tied the game at 6-6 early in the third quarter before
Tommaso Baldineti and
Abel Romero Corbalan pushed LMU ahead by two. The Lancers again provided a response to tie the game at 8-all with 2:29 to play. From that point on, it was all Lions as
Jonny Rimlinger scored three goals over the final 2:12 of the quarter and Baldineti added one of his own.
The first six goals of the fourth quarter all went LMU's way as well. Romero Corbalan scored on his fourth of the day on the opening possession, then Baldineti followed, and
Augie Renezeder beat the keeper all within the first two minutes of the fourth quarter. Baldineti scored his fourth of the game to double up the Lancers, 16-8.
Rafael Salonikios beat the keeper on a penalty shot before the midway point and Rimlinger scored his fourth of the game to increase the lead to double digits. CBU scored three over the final 2:34 to bring the game final.
Stelios Dalmaras made 12 saves over the first 28-plus minutes, and added an assist and steal.
Finn Friedland made one save in relief.
LMU held the Lancers to 28.2 percent shooting.
The Lions will take a brief hiatus from conference play on Friday to head to Long Beach State for a 7:00 PM game, before returning to Burns Aquatic Center for one final game this season. LMU will host Pacific on the final day of the regular season with a noon start and senior day to follow.
