SANTA CLARA, Calif. – No. 12 LMU men's water polo won both conference games in Northern California this weekend after defeating No. 14 San Jose State on the road Sunday afternoon. Tomasso Baldineti scored the game-winning goal with less than two minutes for his fifth of the game to propel the Lions to victory, 13-12.
Baldineti scored the game's opening goal, converting a powerplay less than a minute and a half into the game. After San Jose State tied the game,
Tyler Harvey pushed the Lions back on top, 2-1. The Spartans again equalized before
Abel Romero Corbalan and
Tommaso Baldineti gave the Lions a 4-2 lead to close out the first.
After San Jose State cut it to a one-goal game,
Augie Renezeder doubled up the lead to 5-3 more than midway through the second. The home side scored with 20 seconds left before LMU earned a late powerplay and Baldineti converted a 6-on-5 with four seconds showing on the clock.
Outside of a
Denzel Tate goal at the six minute mark of the third, San Jose State four of the first five goals of the second half to take their first lead of the game, 8-7, with 3:26 to play in the period.
Jonny Rimlinger tied the score at 8-8, but again, the Spartans retook the lead with an even-strength goal. Over the last 1:11 of the quarter, both Baldineti and Rimlinger scored goals to push the Lions back on top, 10-9, entering the final period of play.
Tyler Harvey extended the lead to two goals on LMU's opening possession of the fourth quarter. After SJSU responded, Harvey again beat the goalkeeper to push the Lions back up two with 4:11 showing in the game. San Jose State was not done yet, scoring two unanswered goals to tie the game at 12-all. With 1:59 to play, Baldineti scored his fifth goal of the day to push LMU ahead and secure victory for the Lions.
Stelios Dalmaras made eight saves and added two steals to earn the win.
The Lions are now one of two one-loss teams in the WCC, with two conference games remaining. LMU hosts CBU on Thursday night at 6:00 p.m. back at Burns Aquatics Center.
