LOS ANGELES – On Saturday afternoon, the LMU Lions secured their second consecutive 3-0 victory of the week, defeating the Gonzaga Bulldogs.
The Lions had an early four-point lead over the Bulldogs in the first set, 6-2. The lead persisted until Gonzaga leveled the score at 7-7 with a service ace. The teams remained tied seven more times until the Lions secured a 5-0 run, concluding with a service ace by
Sam Hastings, resulting in a score of 22-17. Eventually, the Lions clinched set one with a score of 25-20.
In the second set, LMU took an early lead with a kill by
Michelle Shaffer. Sustaining the momentum, LMU scored six consecutive points, including four kills by
Amethyst Harper and
Maddie Boerstra. A kill by Shaffer initiated another Lion run, propelling them to a 10-point lead at 16-6. The set concluded with consecutive kills from Hastings and
Tyler Alcorn, establishing the Lions largest lead at 25-13.
Set three saw a closely contested score, with the difference never exceeding three points. A block by
Jacquelyn Moore and Shaffer spurred a 3-0 run for LMU, pushing them ahead by five at 12-7. Although Gonzaga responded with three points, the Lions persisted. Towards the end of the set, they secured four consecutive points, bringing them within reach of victory at 21-13.
Kayla Lopez, a freshman outside, recorded only her third and decisive kill of the season, concluding the set at 25-18 and granting the Lions their second 3-0 sweep of the week.
Harper claimed the lead on the leaderboard, securing 13 kills. Alcorn and Moore both achieved hitting percentages surpassing .600%. In the digs category, Hastings and Shaffer took the top two spots, with Hastings recording 13 and Shaffer not far behind with 12. Alcorn emerged as the block leader, concluding the game with four impressive blocks.
The Lions will play their upcoming game on Saturday, November 11, facing the San Francisco Dons at 1 p.m., which will also be Senior Day.
