Lions Sweep Portland Pilots For Second Time This Season

LOS ANGELES – On Thursday night, LMU defeated the Portland Pilots, securing a 3-0 match sweep and a 2-0 season sweep for the Lions.

LMU took control early in the first set, beginning with a seven-point run, started by a Maddie Boerstra kill, and establishing a 12-4 lead over the Pilots. The Lions continued their dominance, having three additional 4-0 runs, and concluded the set with a decisive kill by Jacquelyn Moore, securing a 25-10 set victory.

In the second set, LMU maintained their high energy, opening with three consecutive kills from Kari Geissberger and Moore. The Pilots responded with three of their own, leveling the score at 3-3. Despite both teams notching three-in-a-row later in the set, the Lions held a one-point lead. A powerful hit by Boerstra started a 5-0 push for LMU; and even with Portland's efforts, Isabella Bareford clinched the second set for LMU by delivering a service ace, concluding it with a score of 25-20.

The third set saw an impressive start for LMU, as an Amethyst Harper kill triggered a seven-point run, propelling them to an 8-2 lead. Midway through the set, a block by Moore and Geissberger extended LMU's advantage to 10 points at 17-7. The Lions secured the largest lead of the set, with back-to-back kills by Geissberger pushing them to an 11-point victory at 25-14, completing the match sweep for LMU.

Geissberger led the game in kills with 12, followed by 10 from Harper. Tyler Alcorn, Boerstra, Harper, and Moore all achieved hitting percentages above .500, with Sam Hastings leading in digs with eight, followed by Michelle Shaffer with six. Mia Schafer and Bareford claimed the top two spots in assists, finishing with 14 and 17, respectively. Moore and Boerstra both recorded four blocks each, ending the match with a well-rounded performance by LMU.

LMU's next game is this Saturday, Nov. 4, against the Gonzaga Bulldogs in Gersten Pavilion at 1:00 p.m.
