TUCSON, AZ - The LMU women's basketball team fell short to the Arizona Wildcats Sunday afternoon, 70-54.
Â
The Lions defense showed out in the initial two minutes, causing the Wildcats to miss their first two field goal attempts. LMU's
Amaya Oliver opened the scoring with a jumper, and a three-pointer from
Nicole Rodriguez leveled the game at five apiece. A putback by
Da'Ja Hamilton later gave LMU the lead. Although the Lions had a one-point lead entering the first timeout, they relinquished it during the second quarter.
Â
During the second quarter, a floater by
Sydney Gandy brought the Lions into the twenties, putting them less than 10 points away from the Wildcats. Free throws were a challenge for LMU, shooting only 25%, but they compensated with field goals. A fast break layup by
Daylee Dunn, assisted by
Alexis Mark, narrowed the gap to six (29-26). The Lions gained momentum, and a crucial three-pointer from Gandy, following a Wildcats turnover, brought them within one possession of Arizona (29-26). Although the Lions were still behind at halftime, the energy was high.
Â
Entering the third quarter, a three-pointer by Mark kick-started the Lions' scoring, bringing them closer to the Wildcats. LMU reduced the deficit to three before Arizona took control, leading by 13 points heading into the fourth quarter. Arizona maintained their momentum in the final quarter, ultimately defeating LMU with a score of 70-54.
Oliver had a stellar game, achieving her first double-double of the season with 12 points and 16 rebounds. Hamilton also delivered a standout performance, leading the Lions in points with 18.
Â
Looking ahead, the Lions' next game is scheduled for Thursday, Nov. 16, against the Biola Eagles at 6 PM in Gersten Pavilion.
