LOS ANGELES – The game was tied with two minutes to play, but Yale hit two big jumpers down the stretch to take the game on their West Coast road trip, 83-80.
In a first half that went back and forth,
Justin Wright opened the game with a splash three to give LMU the first points of the afternoon. Yale then flipped the score to go on top for the first of nine lead changes in the opening 20 minutes.
The largest lead for the Bulldogs stood as seven points until
Dominick Harris and
Will Johnston knocked down back-to-back triples to pull the Lions within a point.
A
Lars Thiemann layup with 11:35 mark put LMU back on top for the first time since the opening minute half.
The lead continued to trade sides until the midway point.
Rick Issanza tied the game with a point basket with 30 seconds left and then Yale hit a go-ahead three with four ticks on the clock to take a 46-43 lead into halftime.
After Yale led by as many as six in the second half, LMU used a 7-0 run to take a lead into the final 10 minutes of regulation.
Keli Leaupepe and
Alex Merkviladze hit layups, and
Justice Hill followed with a three for a 67-63 lead. The Bulldogs then scored the next six a larger 11-3 run to go back on top by five with 4:32 to play.
LMU kept chipping away as Thiemann hit 5-for-7 free throws bringing his point total to 13.
As part of his career-high 21 points,
Dominick Harris hit a three to pull within two points with 3:03 to play and
Justice Hill tied the game at 78-78 with 2:29 remaining.
Needing another stop, LMU benefitted from the play of Harris. The transfer guard stole the ball and went the length of the court drawing a foul. He sunk two free throws to break into the 20-point plateau for the first time in his career.
Yale hit a jumper to go up three with nine seconds showing on the clock setting up a final look for the Lions. LMU was unable to get the equalizer and ultimately time ran out on them.
Justin Wright finished with 11 points and
Justice Hill and
Will Johnston scored 10 apiece.
Both teams shot 49 percent from the field, with a very healthy paint production. Yale scored 42 points in the paint, and LMU scored 34.
LMU's bench nearly tripled the reserves from Yale, with substitutes outscoring the Bulldogs 33-12.
The Lions will be back at Gersten Pavilion Tuesday night to face Jackson State in the third consecutive home game.
