SPOKANE, Wash. - Jennessa Groves took a slick feed from
Megan Rucker in the 20
th minute and slotted home her fourth goal of the season and the LMU Lions drew 1-1 with No. 19 Gonzaga on the road in Spokane, Wash. On Wednesday night.
LMU put on a battle on the low block as the Bulldogs totaled 30 shots in the contest. Graduate goalkeeper
Ellie Sommers made seven saves in the contest.
The Lions shocked the Zags in the 20th minute when some nice interplay led Rucker to some space on the left side of the pitch. She slid a ball across the penalty area to a waiting Groves. Groves took a deft touch, spun and drilled the back of the net with her fourth tally of the season.
Groves and Rucker had the creative juices flowing just five minutes later, and the Lions were inches away from a second. Olivia Winter played nicely with the backline to create some space before turning and linking up with Groves who played a nicely weighted ball to Rucker on the left side. Rucker made a nifty move and played a ball across the face of goal.
Alex Hobbs was lurking at the back post but the goalkeeper got fingertips on it to stave away the chance.
LMU took the lead into the locker room.
The Lions had another chance after the break. Kylie Dobbs found some running room and cut in on her signature left foot, and got great contact on her strike, but it was blocked by a Bulldogs defender.
The Lions held on for 44 minutes, but the Zags equalized in the 90th minute to escape with a draw.
The Lions will finish up the regular season on Saturday, November 4 against Saint Mary's. The match will begin at 7:00 p.m. (PT) and will be preceded by the senior night ceremony for the 15 Lions seniors.
