LOS ANGELES – The Lions women's soccer team fell to Portland 1-0 on Saturday night at Sullivan Field.
LMU used a solid defense to slow the game's pace down and attempted to catch the Pilots on the counterattack.
Jennessa Groves continued to be a threat at the top of the Lions' attack. She managed a pair of shots with one on target.
Kylie Dobbs produced the most dangerous chance for the Lions in the 30th minute of the game. After the Lions won a pair of corners, the ball was cleared to the top of the 18-yard box and blasted a rocket of a shot that elicited a gasp from the crowd but flew just high over the crossbar.
The Lions limited the Pilots to just three shots in the first half, with the backline blocking crosses and would-be attempts.
The Pilots scored after the interval from a corner kick, headed past the goalkeeper Ellie Sommers.
The Lions tried to get back into the game through Groves. Leading the counterattack, Groves saw the goalkeeper off her line and attempted a lofted shot from just beyond midfield. The goalkeeper kept the ball out of the net.
As the clock wound down, the Lions won a free kick just on the edge of the shooting range for Alice Santen. She ripped a shot from distance, reminiscent of the shot she took against Grand Canyon that hit the crossbar. This effort went over the bar and out for a goal kick.
LMU will be back in action on Saturday, October 14, against the San Francisco Dons at Negoesco Stadium in San Francisco. The match will begin at 6:00 p.m. (PT) and will be broadcast on ESPN+.
