SAN DIEGO – Jennessa Groves scored her third goal of the season in LMU women's soccer's 1-1 draw with San Diego on Wednesday night in their West Coast Conference opener. 

 

The Lions (6-5-1, 0-0-1 WCC) started on the right foot with Groves netting before the ten-minute mark. The Lions earned a pair of corner kicks, with the second being directed in by Gabriella Marchal. Marchal delivered a dangerous cross that Groves rose up and met with an emphatic header into the far post. 

 

Groves is now tied for the team lead with three goals. She has also matched her goal total from the 2022 season. 

 

Megan Rucker had a venomous shot saved by the San Diego goalkeeper just six minutes later. After the ball was reversed back to her following a corner, she cut inside and found space to fire off a dangerous left-footed effort that was saved at the near post.  

 

The Lions went into the half with a one goal lead, but the Toreros fought hard to earn the draw after the intermission. 

 

The Toreros missed a golden opportunity to tie things up in the 81st minute but scored the equalizer moments later.  

 

Groves had a chance to retake the lead in the 86th minute, once again off of a feed from Marchal. She rose above the defense once again and once again delivered a header to the far post, but the Toreros goalkeeper made a spectacular save to push it wide. 

 

The Lions will look forward to Saturday when they meet the Portland Pilots at 7:00 p.m. (PT) at Sullivan Field.
