LOS ANGELES - Head Coach Bonnie Adair and LMU Swimming are excited to announce that Erik Matheson has been elevated to Associate Head Coach for the 2023-2024 season. Matheson joined the LMU staff as an assistant coach in 2021.
Last season, Matheson oversaw the team's recruiting efforts, adding twelve newcomers to the Lion's current 2023-34 squad. Matheson will continue leading LMU's recruiting efforts while assuming additional administrative responsibilities and on-deck coaching responsibilities.
Matheson has over twenty-eight years of coaching experience at high school, masters, club, community college, and NCAA teams in California and Colorado. Prior to starting at LMU, Matheson spent four years as the Head Women's Swimming & Diving Coach at Western Colorado University (WCU) and led Western to their first NCAA Champion, 12 NCAA All-Americans, 10 RMAC Champions, and 35+ WCU record-setting swims.
"Erik has been a game changer for our program, not only by helping to bring in one of the largest and most talented recruiting classes that we've had in the last decade but also by his commitment and passion to our swimmers on the pool deck. With his extensive science-based background, he led our distance swimmers to lifetime best achievements at the PCSC Conference championship last season, where our team nearly doubled the point total from the previous year and moved up two places in the team standings. With our talented newcomers, we now have our sights on being among the top three or four teams in the conference this season, putting us in a position to compete for a conference championship in the following years. I look forward to collaborating with Erik throughout the season to achieve those goals with our team," said Adair.
The season continues next week as the Lions head to Malibu for the Rodionoff Invitational taking place October 13 and October 14.
