Lions Fall Short to Tigers in an Intense Five Set Match

STOCKTON, CA – The Lions fall short to the Pacific Tigers in a five-set match, 3-2, Saturday afternoon.

Early in the game, the Lions took an early lead of 5-1, started by consecutive kills from Amethyst Harper and Jacquelyn Moore. The team maintained their advantage and extended it by six before the first media timeout. Even with Pacific's efforts to regroup, the Lions clinched the first set with a score of 25-18.

The second set was a nail-biter, with both teams fiercely competing. Although the Lions initially gained a three-point lead at 10-7, the Tigers managed two 5-0 runs, reclaiming the lead at 22-17. Despite the Lions making a late push for a comeback, Pacific managed to secure the set with a score of 25-22.

In the third set, the Lions took an early lead of 5-2 but faced a challenge from the Tigers, who went on a 3-0 run and narrowed the gap. LMU responded with a strong push initiated by Tyler Alcorn's successful kill, propelling the team into a five-point streak and establishing a 16-8 lead. The Lions went on to win the set with a score of 25-17.

The fourth set saw the Tigers taking control with an 8-0 run, leading 11-7. Although the Lions tried to close the gap, Pacific secured the set with a score of 25-16. The fifth and final set remained highly competitive. The Tigers scored the first point, but LMU immediately followed. Two kills from Harper and Shaffer put the Lions up two; but a few plays later, the Tigers scored three in a row, leading the Lions by one, 10-9. The score would tie twice before Pacific ultimately took the set, 15-12, and the match win, 3-2.

Moore led the Lions with 16 kills, closely followed by Harper with 15. Moore also excelled in blocks, securing six for the team. Isabella Bareford contributed significantly with 29 assists, while Shaffer showcased strong defensive play with 23 digs.

The Lions next game is Thursday, Nov. 2, against the Portland Pilots in Gersten Pavilion.
