Hobbs Nets in Loss to Tigers

LOS ANGELES – The LMU women's soccer team fell to the visiting Pacific Tigers 2-1 on Saturday afternoon at Sullivan Field in a match with two goals scored in the final 10 minutes.

Pacific opened the scoring in the first half after a looping ball went over goalkeeper Ellie Sommers and careened off the post and into the net. After a short review, the referee confirmed that the ball had crossed the line and gave the goal to the Tigers.

Megan Rucker made a dizzying run at the end of the half in an attempt to tie up the match. She weaved in an out of a number of Tiger defenders before chipping a left-footed effort on the end line towards the goal. The Pacific goalkeeper was caught off guard and nervously pushed the looping shot out of bounds for a corner kick.

The Lions went into the locker room with a one-goal deficit, but came out of the second half with renewed vigor.

The breakthrough came in the 84th minute when Olivia Winter knicked a pass from Pacific and made a darting run through the midfield. She looked up and saw Alex Hobbs making a run in behind the defense and slipped a nice through ball in to the senior. Hobbs took a dribble and held off the central defender to get a shot off that hit square off the post. The rebound fell right to her feet and she tapped in from close range.

With the game winding down, the Tigers wore down the Lions with a number of corners before finally punching one in for the game winner.

The Lions will return to action on Wednesday, November 1 on the road against Gonzaga in Spokane, Wash. They will then return home to face Saint Mary's on Saturday, November 4. Saturday will also be senior day celebration for the 13 seniors celebrating from LMU.
