Lions Earn Third Ranked Win Over No. 9 Portland

LOS ANGELES – Anthony Wilson has scored three goals in his collegiate career, but none bigger than the floating header that settled into the top left corner of the net in Saturday night's 1-0 victory over No. 9 Portland at Sullivan Field.

With a raucous Saturday night crowd in attendance, as well as LMU men's soccer alumni from throughout the years, LMU and Portland put on a show for the Lion faithful.

The first half was an end-to-end affair with neither team securing a goal.

The Lions could not find a rhythm and failed to record a shot in the first half, with the only danger of concession coming on a shot that rattled the crossbar and stayed out.

The second half was a different story.

Tyger Smalls was inches away from a stunning free-kick goal just after the break. The junior blasted a curled shot that flew past the post, just wide.

The Lions started to generate more chances as the half progressed. Smalls recorded two more shots in the 49th and 56th minutes as well to give the Lions something to light up the "shot" window on the scoreboard.

Head coach Kyle Schmid opted for a triple substitution in the 65th minute and it paid dividends just mere moments later. Marco Byers-Mora, Eli Armstrong and Wilson all came on in the substitution, but it was Wilson that will be remembered.

Christian Ortiz found Wilson with a little bit of space with about 40 yards to goal. Wilson wriggled between a pair of defenders before sliding the ball across the top of the penalty box to Tyler Trusner. Trusner chipped a cross in where he found a flying Wilson ready to pounce. Wilson finished into the top corner, avoiding the outstretched arms of the Pilots keeper, and wheeled away in celebration.

The Lions absorbed the pressure for the remainder of the match to notch their third ranked win of the season.

Massimo Oedekoven Pomponi recorded his second consecutive clean sheet and sixth this season but only recorded a single save in the 90 minutes.

The Lions move into fourth place in the WCC with the result, one point behind Portland and two behind co-leaders Santa Clara and San Diego.

LMU will be on the road at San Francisco on Saturday, November 4 before returning home to face Saint Mary's in the regular season finale.
