Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Bareford, Boerstra Lift Lions Over Toreros

SAN DIEGO – Isabella Bareford recorded a double-double and three service aces, Maddie Boerstra hit .409 and the LMU women's volleyball team defeated San Diego 3-1 on Thursday night at the Jenny Craig Pavilion in San Diego.

After dropping the first set 23-25, the Lions reeled off three straight set wins 25-15, 25-16, 25-22 to notch the victory over the Toreros and complete a season sweep over their WCC foe for the first time since 2003.

Bareford's double-double was the second of the season and second in a row for the setter. After not recording double-digit digs for the first 18 matches, the senior has reached that mark in back-to-back games.

FIRST SET

The Toreros took the first set 25-23 in what was a well-contested back-and-forth affair.

LMU and USD both could not gain any momentum within the first 18 points of the match as it was knotted at nine after a Jacquelyn Moore kill.

The Toreros took five of the next six points before the media timeout to build a five-point lead at 15-10.

It was then LMU's turn to go on a run. The Lions scored five of the next seven points to pull within a pair on a Boerstra service ace.

The Toreros used one of their timeouts to try and stop the run, but the Lions came out of the break and scored two more to tie the set at 17. The latter point was Boerstra second ace of the set.

Both teams would continue to trade points until the Toreros took a 24-23 lead and recorded a service ace to finish the first set.

SECOND SET

After dropping the first, the Lions
came out swinging in the second set.

The Toreros scored the first point of the second set, before the Lions took over and never surrendered their lead for the remainder of the set.

Moore recorded a kill to make the set 2-1 and the Lions staved off all momentum from the Toreros for the remainder of the set.

Tyler Alcorn and Boerstra combined for a block to make the score 8-5, and the Lions would score 10 of the next 15 points, culminating in an Amethyst Harper kill to take a commanding 18-10 lead.

The Lions would cruise to a 25-15 win in the second set, finished off by Geissberger.

LMU flipped an offensive switch in the second set after hitting .154 in the first. The Lions failed to make an attacking error in the second set en route to hitting .500 as a team. Harper rebounded from a tough first set to hit .800 in the second and Moore was 3-for-3 on swings while throwing in a solo block to boot.

THIRD SET

After the Toreros opened the third set with a service ace, the Lions continued to reel off points and keep the momentum rolling.

Michelle Shaffer tied the set at one with a kill and then went to the service line.

The Lions went on a four point run that included another Harper and Moore combo block, a Shaffer ace and a Geissberger kill.

The Lions would not relinquish the lead for the remainder of the set and would extend the lead on a series of multi-point runs.

The next four point run came with Mia Schafer on the service line. After a Moore kill returned the serve to the Lions, Schafer and Alcorn checked into the match. Schafer would record an ace on her second service to make the match 10-4 and force a Torero timeout. One more point would follow after a San Diego attacking error and the Lion lead would extend to seven.

The Lions would cruise from there allowing the Toreros to put up back-to-back points only twice the rest of the way.

Geissberger dominated the second set with five points on four kills and an ace. She hit .571 in the third set.

Four different Lions recorded an ace in the set. Shaffer, Schafer, Geissberger and Harper all had their serves cooking.

With eight attacking errors in the set, the Toreros were held to a .000 hitting percentage.

FOURTH SET

The Lions continued to roll in the fourth set but the Toreros made a run to make the set interesting towards the end.

LMU built a five point lead after winning ten of the first fifteen points culminating in a Geissberger-Alcorn combo block.

The largest lead of the set was a seven point lead after a Torero attack error gave the Lions a 16-9 lead, but the Toreros would whittle that lead to one at 20-19.

LMU would put up back-to-back points to create some breathing room. Moore recorded her eighth and final kill of the match before a Torero attacking error made the score 22-19.

It was the Toreros turn to score back-to-back points to once again cut the deficit to one.

After trading points to make the set 23-22, LMU put the nail in the coffin with a Harper kill before Boerstra ended the match with a kill of her own.

The Lions flew around the court in the fourth set, recording a whopping 22 digs.

Sam Hastings led the team with 17 digs, with Harper adding 13 of her own.

LMU also recorded ten service aces as a team, their second-highest total this season.

The Lions travel to Stockton, Calif. To face Pacific on Saturday at 12:00 p.m. (PT).
