LAS VEGAS – Madison Werner scored in the first half and Alice Santen scored in the second half and the LMU women's soccer team defeated the host UNLV Rebels 2-1 on Thursday night in Las Vegas, Nev.
Werner found the back of the net coming after a perfectly weighted ball into her path by
Amber McCorkle.
Jennie Immethun took the ball wide before feeding McCorkle outside the 18-yard box. She turned and saw a streaking Werner and flicked a ball right onto her feet. Werner took a dribble and then fired into the right side of the net for the opener.
The Rebels would equalize before the half after the Lions failed to deal with a corner.
The second half was another back-and-forth affair with not a lot of space between the teams.
The breakthrough came after another McCorkle to Werner connection. After receiving the ball outside the 18-yard box, Werner drove in and went to ground after some hard contact with a Rebels defender. The penalty was awarded, and Santen patiently placed the ball into the right side of the net to give the Lions a lead they would never relinquish.
Amanda Delgado allowed her first goal of the season after starting out with four consecutive clean sheets. Of the eight keepers that had not allowed a goal going into tonight's match, Delgado was the only one that had played every single minute this season.
The win pushes the unbeaten streak to five games. The last time the Lions started out a season unbeaten in five contests was in 2006 when they went 3-0-2 to start the season.
IRON WOMEN
Delgado, Santen, Genevieve Watkins and Gabriella Marchal continue to display high endurance levels after going another 90 minutes. The three defenders and the goalkeeper have combined to allow a single goal in five matches all while playing every minute of each match.
Up next for the Lions is a trip to UC Riverside on Thursday, Sept. 15. That match will begin at 7:30 PM and will be broadcast live on ESPN+. Live stats will be available on LMULions.com.
