RIVERSIDE, Calif. - Janessa Groves found the back of the net in the second minute and the LMU women's soccer team drew away at UC Riverside 1-1 on Thursday evening in Riverside, Calif.
Fans were still filing into the stadium when the Lions won a corner in the second minute after Groves found some space on the wing.
Gabriella Marchal took the corner and curled in an inviting ball that was not cleared very well.
Makayla Demelo played the ball back across the face of goal to a waiting Groves who settled the ball and fired in for a one goal advantage.
In the 11th minute, Marchal had a long-distance look that went just wide.
Right before the end of the first half, Sophia Pearlman pressured the Highlander goalkeeper into a turnover. The ball fell to Sierra Dunphy who fired a shot that went just wide left of the post.
Madison Werner had a sniff of goal in the 68
th minute after some good build up play led to an opportunity on the right wing, but her shot was held by the Highlander goalkeeper.
Moments later she played a dangerous ball across the six-yard box that was smothered by the keeper.
The Lions would concede in the 82nd minute to mark the final score line.
The Lions remain unbeaten this season. They continue to play extremely stingy defense and have been opportunistic on offense.
Amanda Delgado has allowed only two goals in seven games and displayed why in the 82
nd minute with a stunning save in which she jumped high and punched the ball over the crossbar.
They are one of 27 remaining unbeatens in Division I. The West Coast Conference has four of those teams.
The Lions finally return home to host Northern Arizona on Friday, September 23 at 7 p.m. at Sullivan Field.
