LOS ANGELES – The #15 LMU men's water polo team moved to 2-0 on the season and picked up a conference win on Thursday over Concordia. The Lions allowed just one goal in the first half and two goals after three quarters before topping the Eagles, 18-7.
Four different Lions scored first quarter goals to give LMU an early 4-0 lead.
Joseph Cavazos,
Blazo Mitrovic,
David Carrasco, and
Jonny Rimlinger each scored in that opening period with the final goal coming on a converted 5-Meter penalty shot from Rimlinger.
Carrasco and
Tyler Harvey each scored in the second quarter to give LMU a 6-0 advantage. The Lions nearly carried a shutout into the half before Concordia converted on a powerplay with just 10 seconds remaining.
The Lions started fast in the third quarter as well as
Bruno Salonikios, Cavazos, and Mitrovic all scored in the opening 2:20. After Concordia added one to their count, Mitrovic went back-to-back to increase the lead to double-digits, 12-2.
Augie Renezeder closed out the quarter with a goal with less than a minute on the third period clock.
Each team scored five goals in the fourth quarter. Mitrovic scored his fifth of the day to go along with his three assists.
Dimitriy Kobets scored two in the period. Renezeder and
Denzel Tate closed out the period with goals in consecutive possessions.
Finn Friedland made three saves and added three steals before being replaced in the fourth quarter with Can Cagler's debut performance with a save in the final 6:17 of the game.
The Lions are just beginning their week, and will play again on Friday at Biola and Saturday at La Verne.
