Lions Defeat The Broncos in 3-0 Sweep

LOS ANGELES –  The LMU women's volleyball defeated the Santa Clara Broncos in a 3-0 sweep Thursday night.

The Lions started set one on a 4-0 run against the Broncos.  Two back-to-back kills from Santa Clara would put the Broncos within three of the Lions, 6-3. A kill by Kari Geissberger, from Rose Booth, would give the Lions the momentum they needed. LMU went on a 7 unanswered point streak leading the Broncos, 13-3. Santa Clara went on many 2-0 streaks, but still trailed the Lions, 16-8. It would be a kill from Phoebe Awoleye that would start a five-point streak and give LMU the win, 25-11.

A service ace by Booth would put LMU on the board first in set two. The Lions would then take the lead, 5-2, thanks to a block assist from Audrey Klemp, Geissberger and Awoleye. Towards the end of the set, the Broncos went on a 3-0 run and only trailed the Lions by two, 17-15. That two-point deficient didn't last long when the Lions went on a seven-point streak and extending the lead to nine, 24-15. A kill by Jacquelyn Moore would give LMU the point they needed to win the set, 25-16.

Once again, the Lions opened set three with a kill from Geissberger, with an assist from Isabella Bareford. For the first time the whole game, the Broncos would take the lead by one over the Lions, 3-2. The lead didn't last long for Santa Clara. The Lions went on a 3-0 run and retook the lead. LMU would then go on another three-point streak lead the Broncos, 12-7. Both teams rattled off points here and there, but it would be LMU who would win the set, 25-19, and win the game in a 3-0 sweep.

Geissberger led the Lions with 12 kills and a total of 15 points.
