Lions Win in Five Against the Dons

LOS ANGELES – The Lions defeated the San Francisco Dons in a 3-2 showdown Saturday afternoon.
 
The first set started off with both the Lions and Dons going one for one until a kill by Audrey Klemp followed by an ace serve by Ella Boehle gave LMU the lead, 4-2. A kill by Kari Geissberger sparked a five unanswered point streak for the Lions making it, 9-3. LMU had two 2-0 runs that would place them eight points ahead of the Dons, 14-6. San Francisco would then go on a 4-0 run coming within five points of LMU, 20-15. A kill by Isabella Bareford started a three-point streak for the Lions making it, 23-15. The Lions would win the set, 25-18.
 
The Dons opened set two with a 2-0 run over the Lions. A kill by Rose Booth would put the Lions on the board, but the Dons would go on three-point streak right after to take the lead, 5-1. Midway through the set the Dons would go on a four unanswered point streak lead the lions by six, 15-9.  A service error by San Francisco started a 4-0 run for LMU, but the Lions still trailed by two, 15-13. Towards the end of the set the Dons went on a four unanswered point streak extending the lead by eight, 23-15, and eventually won the set, 25-18.
 
San Francisco led the Lions by five in the beginning of set three, 8-3. The Lions would then go on a 3-0 trailing the Dons by, 11-8. A kill by Jacquelyn Moore, from Sam Hastings, ignited a five-point streak which put the Lions within one of the Dons, 20-19. LMU would take the lead from San Francisco after a block assist from Geissberger and Awoleye, 22-21. Set three went past 25 points and it was LMU who would take the third set, 31-29.
 
Set four opened with the Dons taking a 4-0 lead over the Lions. A Geissberger kill would put LMU on the board, but San Francisco would go on another four-point streak making it, 8-1. The Dons extended their lead when they racked in four more point leading the Lions, 18-10. LMU would go on a 3-0 run, but that wasn't enough to take the set. San Francisco would win set four, 25-19.
 
The fifth set started off close with both teams scoring no more than two points each. It was LMU who would go on a six unanswered point streak and lead San Francisco, 12-7. The Dons went on their own 3-0 run coming within two, 12-10. A kill by Awoleye gave LMU the edge they needed to win set five, 15-11, and win the game, 3-2.
 
Bareford led both teams with 50 assists while Awoleye led with 17 kills.
 
The Lions next match is Oct. 6 against Saint Mary's at Gersten Pavilion.
