LOS ANGELES – The Lions defeated the Portland Pilots in a 3-0 sweep in their WCC home opener Tuesday evening.
 
Set one started off in the Lions favor leading the Pilots, 5-2. A kill by Jacquelyn Moore would start LMU's three-point streak making the score to 9-4. Midway through the set, the Lions went on an 8-0 run leading the Pilot by 14, 21-7. Portland would rattle off a couple points here and there, but it would be a kill from Isabelle Reffel that would end the set, 25-11, and give LMU the 1-0 lead.
 
The second set started off with the Lions getting on the board. LMU would then go a 3-0 run leading the Pilots, 4-1. The Pilots went on a four unanswered point streak of their own and took the lead from the Lions, 5-4. A kill from Moore, with an assist from Isabella Bareford, began a five-point streak and put the Lions back up, 10-6. Portland had a few streaks throughout the set, but could never regained the lead from LMU. The Lions would win set two, 25-19.
 
Set three was a close one for the Lions. Rose Booth put LMU on the board first with a kill from Bareford. Both teams would go on back-to-back two point runs until the Lions went on a 3-0 run and claimed the lead, 12-9. The score would tie up at 17-17 because of a three unanswered point streak from the Pilots. The Lions would then go on multiple streaks to reclaim the lead and win the set, 25-22, and sweep the Pilots, 3-0.

Phoebe Awoleye led the Lions with seven blocks. Bareford also lead both teams with 25 assists.
 
The Lions next game will be, Sept. 29, against Santa Clara University in Santa Clara, CA.
