SEATTLE – Derek Goodman and Dylan Shockey both made it on the scoresheet and the LMU men's soccer team defeated the host Seattle University Redhawks 2-1 on Sunday afternoon in Seattle, Wash.
The first half was competitive with Seattle winning a corner in the 3rd minute and continuing to pressure the Lion goal for much of the first ten minutes.
The Lions unlocked the Redhawks defense when Goodman picked up the ball in the midfield and made his move. He zigzagged across the right wing before unleashing a venomous shot that found the left side of the net. It was Goodman's first goal of the season and third involvement after recording two assists early on.
Just five minutes later LMU doubled the lead.
Leo Zulli launched a corner into the near post where Shockey found himself free to head home from close range. The goal was Shockey's first of the season and fourth involvement. It was his fourth goal in his LMU career.
Mitchell Wilson continued to be solid in net, registering a spectacular save in the 42nd minute that kept Seattle off the scoreboard in the first half. With the Redhawks getting an opportunity on the LMU doorstep, Wilson pushed a shot onto the crossbar to come up clutch.
The Redhawks would get a goal in the 52nd minute, but the momentum would be erased moments later when they would be booked with their first red card of the match.
Christian Ortiz came very close to notching his first goal with the Lions in the 83rd minute, but the Seattle keeper stretched to play the ball off the crossbar to keep the game close.
The Redhawks earned two more red cards in the 88th minute and finished the match with 8 men on the pitch.
The Lions have one more nonconference game against UCLA on Friday, October 14, but will play a pair of West Coast Conference games before that. The conference opener will be against San Francisco on Oct. 1 at Sullivan Field. That match will begin at approximately 7 p.m. (PT).
