LOS ANGELES – The Lions lost in three sets to ranked BYU in their WCC conference opener.
 
LMU was first to get on the board in set one. Two attack errors from BYU would put the Lions up by one, 5-4. An ace by Isabella Bareford would extend the lead for the Lions, 8-6. BYU went on a 3-0 run came within one of LMU, 9-10. The Lions would then go on their own three-point streak; thanks to a kill by Rose Booth and a service ace from Ella Boehle making it, 13-11. 
 
LMU held onto the lead midway through the set. A kill from Audrey Klemp, with help from Bareford, would start a four unanswered point streak for the Lions leading, 20-16. The Cougars went on a three-point streak followed by a four-point streak and took the lead from the Lions, 24-22. It was a close set, but BYU would win set one, 25-23.
 
Set two started off with BYU going on a 3-0 run. A kill by Jacquelyn Moore would get the Lions on the board and be within two of the Cougars, 3-1. BYU led LMU majority of the second set. The closet the Lions came to the Cougars was five points thanks to an ace by Boehle. BYU would hold onto the lead and win set two, 25-18.
 
Set three was close between the two teams. Both the Lions and Cougars would score no more than one point against each other. Eventually BYU would take the lead, 6-5. The Cougars would then go on a 4-0 run and increase the lead, 16-11. A kill by Phoebe Awoleye followed by back-to-back kills from Moore and Isabelle Refell would tie up the score, 21-21. Unfortunately for the Lions, the Cougars went on a four-point streak and won the set, 25,21. BYU won the game 3-0.
 
The Lions next game will be Saturday, Sept. 24, at 12PM against No. 4 San Diego.
