LOS ANGELES – Adam Davie scored his fourth goal of the season and sixth year Leo Zulli netted the winner in a 2-1 victory over Cal State Fullerton on Thursday evening at Sullivan Field.
The Lions were outshot 12-7 but the flexibility of Mitchell Wilson and the feet of Davie and Zulli sent the Lions (4-2-1) home victorious.
In the first half, the Lions absorbed a lot of pressure but did not allow any goals. The shot difference in the first half was seven to two and Wilson was forced to make four saves to keep the Titans off the scoresheet.
The second half is where LMU began to exert some pressure.
Derek Goodman had an opportunity rise over the crossbar in the 53rd minute. He found himself played through and fired a right-footed shot that was just too high.
Goodman also had a highlight reel run in the second half. He picked the ball up on the right side of the pitch just past midfield and deked two defenders, nutmegged a third, and zig-zagged his way to the end line on the left side of the field. He attempted a cross but it was blocked.
The goals finally came in the 77th minute. Davie received a lovely outside of the foot flick from Corbin Mercado, made a turn and curled a right-footed shot into the near post for his fourth tally of the season.
The Titans answered right back in the 79th minute.
The match was headed for a draw when Zulli volleyed home the winner. Zulli picked up the ball at the top of the box and laid it off to Goodman. Goodman played an inviting ball through a pair of defenders to Stefan Reuter who sized up the goalie and blasted a low shot. The goalie made the save, but Zulli was there to pounce on the deflection for the game-winner.
It was only the second goal of Zulli's LMU career, a career that has spanned five playing seasons.
Anthony Wilson and Carl Olsen came off the bench to make their LMU debuts.
The Lions host UC Riverside on Sunday, September 18 at 4 p.m. (PT) at Sullivan Field.
