LOS ANGELES – The Lions defeated the San Jose State Spartans in five sets during Saturday evening's match.
 
LMU scored first to open the match. Two back-to-back kills from Jacquelyn Moore and Phoebe Awoleye would give the Lions the lead, 3-1. Sam Hastings followed with an ace serve making for three points in a row for the Lions bringing the score to, 4-1. A few service errors brought the Spartans within two points of the Lions, 8-6. San Jose State then went on a four unanswered point streak taking the lead, 13-11.
 
Awoleye had two back-to-back kills for the Lions that would tie up the score, 14-14. With a few points here and there from both teams, the score would tie up again for the Lions and Spartans at, 21-21. A double block by Kari Geissberger and Awoleye, followed by a kill by Awoleye, would take the Lions ahead of the Spartans, 24-23.
 
The Spartans answered back with a 3-0 run and won the first set, 26-24.
 
San Jose State started the second set with two unanswered points taking the lead, 2-0. A kill by Audrey Klemp would put the Lions on the board, 2-1.
 
A kill by Awoleye, with an assistant from Isabella Bareford, helped shift the momentum for LMU. The Lions went on a 3-0 run and only trailed the Spartans by four, 12-8.
A few service errors by LMU would help extend San Jose State's lead, 15-8. The momentum would shift after a kill by Geissberger.

LMU went on a four-point run and only trailed the Spartans by two, 16-14. Eventually the Spartans would go on multiple runs and win set two, 25-19.
 
Set three started off hot for the Lions. LMU went on a streak of five-points and took the lead, 5-0. A kill by Rose Booth, from Bareford, extended the Lions lead by four, 9-5. LMU would go on another three-point run making the score, 14-8. A service error from the Spartans sparked a four-point unanswered streak. A kill by Klemp, from Sam Hastings, would increase the score to, 18-9.
 
The Lions went on another run increasing the lead to 10 points, 22-12. LMU would win the third set, 25-17.  

The Spartans scored first in the fourth set to take the lead over the Lions, 3-0.
 
The lead didn't last long for the Spartans. The Lions went on a 5-0 run and took the lead from the Spartans, 9-6. San Jose State went on another run and tied the score between the two team, 9-9. The Spartans would take the lead again, 12-10.
 
Both teams went on streaks and were within one point of each other, but it was LMU who went on and won the set, 25-22. 

Geissberger started off set five with a kill for the Lions putting LMU on the board first. A couple service errors gave San Jose State the lead, 4-3.
 
The lead didn't last for the Spartans. LMU would go on a four unanswered point streak jumping over San Jose State, 9-5.
 
San Jose State had to back-to-back kills that would bring them within two points of LMU, 10-8. A block by Klemp and Moore helped increase the lead for the Lions, 12-8,
 
A service error from the Lions brought the Spartans within two points of LMU, 11-13. A kill by Moore followed by a kill from Geissberger would lead LMU to win the set, 15-12, and win the game, 3-2.
 
The Lions next game will be Friday, Sept. 16, against Long Beach State at Gersten Pavilion.
