Men’s Water Polo Ties Program Record with 27 Goals in Win

LA VERNE, Calif. – The #15 LMU men's water polo team scored 27 goals in a game for the first time since 1994 to tie a program record and defeat La Verne on Saturday morning. 
 
The Lions scored the first six goals of the game and took a 7-3 lead after the first quarter. Tyler Harvey opened the scoring at the 5:39 mark, his first of two goals in the quarter. Blazo Mitrovic scored a first quarter half trick, with Alex Marlow and Joseph Cavazos also scoring in the opening period.
 
Cavazos and Marlow opened the second quarter in the same way, scoring the first three combined goals of the period. Cavazos scored scored three in the period and four in the game. Brothers Bruno Salonikios and Rafael Salonikios scored in the period, and Dimitriy Kobets made the count 14 before the halftime whistle as LMU took a 14-5 lead into intermission.
 
The Lions used a season-high nine goals in the third quarter to expand the lead to 23-8. Bruno Salonikios scored two more in the period to get to three for the game. Denzel Tate converted a pair of 6-on-5 goals and Jack Dunbar scored twice at even strength. Richie Rimlinger and Rafael Salonikios also found he back of the cage in the period.
 
The Lions claimed the final four goals of the game, not allowing La Verne to score in the fourth quarter. Richie Rimlinger, Milan Sarkadi, Patrick Powers, and Tommy Lien all added to LMU's lead and closed out the team win.
 
Finn Freidland earned his fourth qin with six saves in just over 19 minutes in the cage. Can Cagler made four saves in his 12:41 in goal.
 
Each team finished with 11 exclusions. The Lions converted 8-of-10 powerplays and only allowed La Verne to capitalize on one of their 10 attempts with a man advantage.
 
Conference play continues on Thursday as LMU heads to Fresno Pacific to take on the Sunbirds.
