NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - The Loyola Marymount University women's soccer team defeated the host CSUN Matadors 1-0 on Sunday evening at the Matador Soccer Field in Northridge, Calif.
The Lions continued to defend very well, frustrating the Matadors into 15 fouls, with 11 coming in the second half.
Amanda Delgado collected another clean sheet, putting up four saves. She now has clean sheets in three consecutive matches to open the season. The last time the Lions had three consecutive shutouts was in 2015.
The Lion backline once again stood out as a strongpoint. Alice Santen had a fabulous clearance for a corner on a dangerous low cross in the first half. Marchal delivered the assist on the goal.
Genevieve Watkins played all 90 minutes and continued to be a solid presence in the back.
Groves, Sarah Murphy, and Makiya Christensen all picked their chances going forward from their wing back positions and Groves ended up on the scoresheet. In the 71
st minute, the Lions earned a corner kick and Marchal stood over the ball. The delivery to the back post found the forehead of Groves who nodded the ball into the left side of the net to open the LMU scoring account for 2022.
After finishing the 2021 season 0-19, the Lions are on a different trajectory after opening the 2022 season 1-0-2.
