LOS ANGELES – The Lions finished day two of the Utah Classic with a match against #23 ranked, Kansas Jayhawks.
The first set started off close with both teams scoring back and forth marking one to two points, at max, in a row. With back-to-back kills from
Audrey Klemp and
Rose Booth, the Lions tied up the score, 4-4.
Neither team went on a run until Klemp brought the momentum with another kill and an assist from
Isabella Bareford. LMU went on a three-point streak giving the Lions the lead, 11-9.
The Jayhawks quickly followed suit and went on a streak of their own racking in four straight points and reclaiming the lead, 11-13.
Midway through the set,
Phoebe Awoleye recorded a big kill shifting the energy for the Lions. LMU went on a five-point run thanks to back-to-back blocks from Awoleye, Bareford, and Geissberger; and an ace serve from
Amanda Burns. The Lions took the lead, 19-14.
It went down to the wire, but Kansas ultimately came out to win the set, 26-28.
During set two, the Lions came out leading the Jayhawks, 6-3. They continued to keep the lead and went on a 3-0 run leaving Kansas with a five-point deficient with a score of, 12-7.
A few service and attack errors from the Lions eventually brought the Jayhawks within three points (12-9). With a block from Geissberger and
Jacquelyn Moore; and an ace from Bareford, LMU was able to extend the lead to 16-11. It was a tight set, with LMU leading most of the way, but the Lions fell short, 28-30.
In set three, a kill by
Rose Booth put LMU on the board with a score of 1-3. Kansas went on a 5-0 run leaving the Lions to play catch up with a score of, 6-14. Unfortunately for the Lions, it was Kansas who ended up going on multiple scoring streaks and capturing the set, 12-25, and winning the game, 3-0.
The Lions next match will be against the Nebraska Huskers on September 1
st in Lincoln, NE.
