LOS ANGELES, CA – The Loyola Marymount University Lions (9-18-1, 6-3 WCC) took a three run lead into the ninth but it wasn't enough as the No. 15 UCLA Bruins tied the game and ultimately won in the 11
th on a game ending home run in a 5-4 loss.
The Lions gave
Jimmy Galicia the ball to start the game on Tuesday night and he produced 5.0 innings of five hit baseball. Galicia gave up one run and had two strikeouts against one walk to 22 Bruin batters.
LMU used a combination of five pitchers on the night and pitched themselves out of a jam in the bottom of the seventh.
Merrick Baldo got two huge strikeouts with the bases loaded to preserve a lead LMU got in the sixth.
The Lions headed into the top of the sixth trailing by one put four runs on the board.
Diego Baqueiro's 2 RBI single to left pushed the Lions ahead and
Grant Weiss added another run with his double.
Heading into the bottom of the ninth the Lions got the first Bruin batter out but a pair of walks allowed UCLA to put the tying run at the plate and a home run knotted the game at four.
LMU put a runner in scoring position in the top of the 10
th but couldn't bring him home in what turned out to be the only threat to score in extra innings. UCLA won the game in the 11
th on a walk off home run to end the contest.
The Lions return to West Coast Conference play when they travel to Stockton, California and play Pacific for three games with the first on Friday, April 8. First pitch between the Lions and Tigers is slated for 6:00 p.m.
