STOCKTON, CA – The Loyola Marymount University Lions (10-18-1, 7-3 WCC) used a big third inning and strong pitching from
Diego Barrera to run past the Pacific Tigers 7-3 on Friday night.
Barrera had five strikeouts against two walks in his 5.2 innings pitched. He gave up a pair of runs and was in command throughout the night while picking up his second win of the season.
LMU got on the board with a run in the second inning but broke through in the visiting half of the third. The Lions loaded the bases on a walk,
Jared Thomas getting hit by a pitch, and a
Diego Baqueiro single to left field.
Grant Weiss delivered a double to left for a pair of runs and the Lions never looked back.
Brett Zimmerman added two more runs to the Lions total with a single up the middle and those proved to be enough.
The Lions gave up a run in the fifth then alternated scores in the sixth and seventh.
In the seventh, LMU got out of a jam with runners on the corners when
Benny Casillas turned a double play ending the scoring threat by the Tigers.
Alex Burge picked up his first save of the season, shutting down the Tigers while taking over for Barrera.
The Lions and Tigers return to Klein Family Field tomorrow afternoon with
Matt McClure going opposite Hunter Hayes. First pitch between LMU and Pacific is set for 3:00 p.m.
