LOS ANGELES – Following Friday night's postponement, the Loyola Marymount University Lions (15-23-1, 11-6 WCC) took two wins from the University of San Francisco on Saturday. The Lions walked off the Dons in the first game of the day, 4-3, with an RBI single in the ninth, before winning 9-3 in the second leg of the doubleheader.
Game 1: LMU 4, USF 3
The Lions jumped out to a 3-0 lead over the Dons with single runs in three consecutive innings.
Ben Grunberg hit an RBI single to right field to start the scoring in the second. Diego Bacqueiro hit his team-leading ninth home run over the fence for a solo shot in the third. In the fourth inning,
Benny Casillas brought home a run on an infield fielder's choice.
The score line held until the sixth inning when a pair of solo home runs brought San Francisco back within a run.
Diego Barrera pitched seven strong innings, but a home run in the seventh tied the game at 3-3.
Barrera finished the seventh inning before being replaced by
Owen Hackman. The LMU pair combined for 10 strikeouts, with Hackman closing out the top half of both the eighth and ninth innings via the K.
Bacqueiro led off the bottom of the ninth with a walk and advanced to second on a
Grant Weiss groundout. With two outs and the winning run in scoring position, catcher
Robbie Ayers singled to left center to give the Lions the walk-off win.
Game 2: LMU 9, USF 3
LMU's bat stayed hot to open the second game of the day. The Lions scored in each of the first five innings. An RBI double off the bat of
Diego Baqueiro gave LMU the first inning advantage.
Patrick Stark doubled the lead with a sac fly later in the frame.
After San Francisco got one back, the Lions responded with two in the second to increase the lead to 4-1.
Benny Casillas reached on a bases loaded fielder's choice before Baqueiro brought home another run on an RBI single.
Two more runs scored for the Dons in the ninth, but that was all that starter
Jimmy Galicia would surrender the rest of the night. Galicia went six innings, allowing just those three runs on five hits, to earn the win.
Cole Roberts gave his pitcher some breathing room in the bottom of the third using his speed to cause a throwing error and allowing a run to score.
Dylan Dennis made it 6-3 in the fourth with an RBI single.
The last of the scoring happened in the fifth as a
Grant Weiss double would score two after an error allowed another run to come home. Stark's second RBI of the game came with a single down the right field line.
Alex Burge picked up the save in three innings of shutout ball.
