LOS ANGELES - The Loyola Marymount University Lions (15-24-1, 11-7 WCC) dropped a tough game on Sunday to the University of San Francisco that would have given the Lions a three-game sweep. Even with the 13-12 loss, LMU took the series over the weekend.
Â
The LMU offense started early as
Devan Ornelas scored on a wild pitch with nobody out.
Grant Weiss came up with an RBI double to right for the second Lions run of the inning.
Â
After USF got on the board in the top of the second, LMU benefited from an RBI single off the bat of Baqueiro and a three-run homer to left center from Weiss for a four-run second.
Â
The Dons came within one with a four-run fourth of their own, but LMU responded in the bottom of the frame with a
Dylan Dennis bases loaded hit by pitch and a
Ben Grunberg sac fly.
Â
The back-and-forth action continued as San Francisco plated a pair in the fifth and LMU did the same in the sixth with solo homers from Dennis and Ornelas.
Â
A ground out in the top of the eighth gave USF a run, but LMU stayed on top with an Ornelas sac fly in the bottom half of the inning.
Â
The script flipped in the ninth as San Francisco erased the deficit for the first time all night and put up a five-run inning. The Lions attempted a comeback in the ninth by scoring a run and leaving the tying run stranded at third.
Â
LMU totaled double-digit hits for the sixth consecutive game. Weiss finished 4-for-5 with four RBI, a pair of doubles, and the home run.
The Lions will host UC Riverside in a non-conference game on Tuesday at Page Stadium before heading on the road to Gonzaga for more WCC action.
