Nine-Run Ninth Helps Lions Top Rebels in High Scoring Series Opener

LAS VEGAS – In a back-and-forth high-scoring Monday night game, The Loyola Marymount University Lions (13-22-1, 9-6 WCC) picked up a non-conference win over UNLV with a 16-12 road win.

The offense started early as LMU put up two runs in the top half of the first. Brett Zimmerman hit a sacrifice fly for the game's first run. Robbie Ayers followed with a two-out RBI single to add a second run in the first frame.

Jimmy Galicia kept the Lions ahead with three no-hit innings to open the game. Galicia went six innings but left with the game tied at 6-6 after UNLV matched with a four-run sixth of their own. Only four of Galicia's runs were earned.

A pinch-hit two-out single by Liam Critchett pushed LMU back on top in the top of the seventh. The lead was short lived as the Rebels posted another four in the bottom of the inning.

The score line remained the same entering the ninth inning as LMU had three outs to erase a 10-7 deficit. The first three batters of the ninth all reached as Baqueiro brought home Benny Casillas on a double and Grant Weiss followed with a single to bring the Lions within a run.

Following a pair of strike outs, Dennis tripled to extend the game and spark a string of seven consecutive hits. Grunberg singled home the run, Cole Roberts followed with a single, and Devan Ornelas brought both home with a double of his own. Casillas singled for the second time in the inning before Baqueiro homered to deep center to add the exclamation point to the comeback.

Michael Nunez allowed two runs in the bottom of the ninth but earned the win for his three innings of work.
