LOS ANGELES- The No. 6 ranked Loyola Marymount University beach volleyball team (22-4) is on the road to San Luis Obispo, Calif. for their biggest test of the season, as they will face No. 1 ranked USC, No. 3 ranked UCLA, No. 4 ranked FSU, and No. 11 ranked Cal Poly, as they look to break into the top five of the AVCA rankings.
The Lions are coming off a 3-1 weekend in Manoa, Hawaii as they swept No. 7 ranked GCU in two games while splitting two games with No. 8 ranked Hawaii.
Despite falling short in the first match to Hawaii, the Lions were able to bounce back with a 3-2 victory in game 2 as
Macy Gordon earned her 100
th career win in NC Beach Volleyball.
Looking ahead to this weekend's tournament, this will face two teams they battled with in the NCAA tournament last year, which eventually led to them losing in the Quarter finals and Semi-Finals rounds to No.1 ranked USC and No. 3 ranked UCLA.
The Lions first match will be held against No. 1 ranked USC, currently 23-1, on Friday, Apr. 15 at 12:30 p.m. PST, followed by another match against No. 3 UCLA at 5:00 p.m. PST.
On Sunday, April. 16, the Lions will face No. 4 Florida State at 12:30 p.m. PST, followed by No. 11 Cal Poly at 4:15 p.m. PST.
The last match between LMU and USC was on May 8, 2021, when USC defeated the Lions in the Semi-Quarter Final round of the NCAA Tournament 3-1, while the last meeting between the Lions and Bruins was in the Semi-Finals Round of the NCAA tournament, falling 3-1 on May 9, 2021 which eliminated them.
As for the last meeting between the Lions and the Seminoles was on Feb. 27, 2021, with the Lions losing 4-1.
As for Cal Poly, this is the second time the two teams will meet this season, as the Lions won the first match, 3-2, in a tight one during the Cal Poly Tournament.
The entire tournament will be held San Luis Obispo, Calif. with the first match of the invitational set to start at 12:30 p.m. PST.
