SANTA CLARA, CA – The Loyola Marymount University Lions (7-15-1, 4-2 WCC) went into extra innings for the second time in three games against the Santa Clara Broncos and this time got two runs in the top of the 10
th to pull out the 4-2 victory.
For the second time this weekend LMU had a starting pitcher go at least seven innings with
Quinn Lavelle's masterful performance on the mound. Lavelle put together his best outing in a Lions uniform with 7.0 innings pitched, three strikeouts opposite one walk against 25 Bronco batters.
Lavelle and
Michael Nunez were the only Lions who took the hill Sunday afternoon. Nunez came on in relief in the eighth and faced 12 batters, striking out two and picked up the win.
For the third straight game against the Broncos, LMU scored a run in the first inning and added to their total in the top of the fourth on a
Cole Roberts RBI single through the right side.
Santa Clara got on the board in the bottom of the fourth with a run and tied the game at two apiece in the bottom of the eighth.
Both teams went quietly in the ninth setting the stage for the Lions retaking the lead in the tenth.
With a pair of runners in scoring position
Grant Weiss hit a chopper towards the shortstop and with his errant throw pushed across two LMU runs. On the day Weiss provided the Lions with three hits and a run scored.
LMU took the two run lead into the bottom of the tenth and Nunez worked a clean inning for the Lions win.
The Lions road swing continues Tuesday night when they travel to Riverside and face the UCR Highlanders with first pitch set for 6:00 p.m.
