SANTA CLARA, CA – The Loyola Marymount University Lions (6-15-1, 3-2 WCC) got another home run from
Jared Thomas but multi-run innings from Santa Clara in the first and sixth proved to be the difference in the 11-5 setback Saturday afternoon.
LMU gave the Saturday afternoon start to
Matt McClure and he was one of four pitchers used on the day.
Mason Kokodynski,
Jimmy Galicia, and
Conner Kershaw all saw time on the mound out of the bullpen.
The Lions opened the game with four straight hits beginning with a double by
Devan Ornelas and three straight singles by
Benny Casillas,
Jared Thomas, and
Diego Baqueiro. With one run already in, a bases loaded walk by
Grant Weiss forced in another giving LMU an early lead.
The lead for LMU didn't last long as the Broncos scored five in the bottom of the first and runs in the second and third.
Heading into the top of the seventh Thomas started off the frame with his second home run of the series and third in as many games. His homer was followed by a Baqueiro single but three straight outs afterwards cooled the Lions in the seventh.
In the top of the eighth LMU quickly loaded the bases with one out. The Broncos helped the Lions score a pair of runs on an error followed by catcher's interference to make things interesting but the scoring ended there after two more outs ended the eighth.
The series wraps up tomorrow afternoon in Santa Clara with first pitch between the Lions and Broncos slated for 12:00 p.m.
