FULLERTON, CA – The Loyola Marymount University Lions (2-10-1, 0-0 WCC) had multiple leads throughout the game but late inning rallies by Cal State Fullerton and a game ending wild pitch by LMU upended the Lions 12-11 in a 15 inning marathon on Friday night.
The Lions trailed early on but put together a season-high six runs in the visiting half of the second on a pair of walks by
Dylan Dennis and
Khadim Diaw and singles from
Ben Grunberg and
Trey Becker in addition to a double by
Diego Baqueiro.
LMU led by three in the top of the third and added to their lead by plating a pair of runs making the score 8-5.
The Titans regained the lead in the bottom of the sixth with four runs but LMU retook the lead in the top of the seventh with a
Patrick Stark triple down the right field line for a pair of RBIs. LMU added to the lead when Baqueiro reached on an error scoring Stark from third.
The Titans closed the gap in the bottom of the eighth with a run and ultimately tied the game in the bottom of the ninth.
Both LMU and Cal St. Fullerton put runners in scoring position in the 13
th and 15
th but a wild pitch by the Lions in the home half of the 15
th proved to be the difference in the 12-11 win for CSUF.
The Lions and Titans return to Goodwin Field tomorrow night at 6:00 p.m. with
Matt McClure going opposite Christian Rodriguez.
