FULLERTON, CA – The Loyola Marymount University Lions (3-10-1, 0-0 WCC) got a quality start from
Matt McClure and timely hitting in the visiting half of the eighth to surge past Cal St. Fullerton 8-2; taking the second contest of the three-game set.
McClure was superb on the mound for the Lions. He produced a season-high 7.0 innings worth of work in addition to spreading out six hits while striking out four Titans against two walks.
He gave up runs in the third and fourth innings but settled down and didn't allow another runner to come across home plate.
The Lions got on the board first courtesy of the hot hitting
Diego Baqueiro in the top of the first. He doubled to right center scoring
Jared Thomas who singled earlier in the frame.
LMU added to their run total when
Liam Critchett sent a 2-1 offering deep over the right field wall for his first home run of the season and 11
th for the Lions in 2022.
The Lions, holding onto a one run lead, broke the game open in the top of the eighth. LMU loaded the bases with one out and
Ben Grunberg worked a walk to bring in a run setting up
Cole Roberts.
With the bases still loaded Roberts singled to right field bringing in a pair of runs.
Devan Ornelas then came up to bat and hit a bases clearing triple to bring the Lions run total to eight which proved to be the difference in the game.
The Lions and Titans battle in the rubber match of their three-game series tomorrow afternoon with first pitch set for 1:00 p.m.
